As a Star Basketball card fanatic, one of the challenges has been distinguishing Type II Counterfeits from the original cards.

As a reminder, the ‘Type II’ Counterfeits were printed around the same time as the original licensed Star cards. However, these cards were printed off-register, didn’t meet quality control standards, and were considered factory rejects.

These cards were meant to be destroyed, but ultimately stolen by a former print production employee and released to the public

Despite their checkered history, these cards are still highly coveted by Star Basketball collectors. They were also printed in a limited supply, unlike the original cards.

It should be noted that the graders, PSA and Beckett, made some mistakes and graded some Type II cards as authentic.

One of the most coveted Star specialized player sets is the 1986 Star Michael Jordan 10 Card Set. The set is also one of the more common Type II sets. Here is a visual guide comparing the 10 cards: Type II vs Original.
