As a Star Basketball card fanatic, one of the challenges has been distinguishing Type II Counterfeits from the original cards.
As a reminder, the ‘Type II’ Counterfeits were printed around the same time as the original licensed Star cards. However, these cards were printed off-register, didn’t meet quality control standards, and were considered factory rejects.
These cards were meant to be destroyed, but ultimately stolen by a former print production employee and released to the public
Despite their checkered history, these cards are still highly coveted by Star Basketball collectors. They were also printed in a limited supply, unlike the original cards.
It should be noted that the graders, PSA and Beckett, made some mistakes and graded some Type II cards as authentic.
