KEYS FOR COLLECTORS

  • This set was sold on the Shop at Home Network in 1997
  • Robert Levin of Star led the public to believe these cards had been locked in a warehouse for over 10 years and were finally being released.
  • However, the set was actually produced in 1997, without an NBA license. Star and Levin were subsequently sued by the NBA.
  • The set features 10 Michael Jordan cards with red borders. Some of the images were new Star uses, while a few were images that were previously part of earlier licensed Star sets. Each card has ‘1984 Gold Medalist’ text on the bottom of the front.

This is one of the more popular Shop At Home issues, featuring the one and only Michael Jordan in a ten-card set. Not to be confused with the actual ‘licensed’ ten-card Michael Jordan set that was issued by Star in 1986. In addition, Jordan has a ‘1984 Gold Medalist’ card that is a part of the licensed 1984-85 set which can make this issue a confusing one for Star collectors.

A licensed 1984-85 Star Michael Jordan card. This is NOT a Shop at Home card, so do not confuse this one because of the ‘1984 Gold Medalist’ at the bottom.

Like all other Star sets, these were released in bags as shown below.

All Shop at Home sets were issued with a letter from Robert Levin, founder of Star. All letters were written very similarly, all claiming that these sets were unearthed from storage when, in fact, Levin had unlawfully printed them in 1997.

There are a few familiar images in this set. Card #7 uses the same image from the 1985 Star Last 11 ROY Jordan card.
